Austin’s article or report of the events in the USA, though short and well intentioned suffers from some very contradictory perspectives which appears to exhibit some ingrained stereotypes or prejudices. On the one hand it shows, correctly, the White Police’s mistreatment of Black people and yet it portrays his own right wingish prejudices about the Black people, just like our Brahmins’ attitude towards non Brahmins, especially the Dalits and minorities (meat eaters). By the looks of the article or report (with comments dominating) Austin does not seem to grasp the anger against the White police shooting Black people as a sport for decades if not centuries. (Remember US soldiers shooting Afghanis or Iraqis for sport?). This is called US exceptionalism abroad against the defenseless countries of the world. This national supremacy is exhibited internally against the Blacks, minorities, and the poor by the predominantly militarized White police force. One must remember, all variety of supremacism is a pathology, and this is very clear in White Supremacists in the West and Hindu supremacists in India as Jewish supremacists in the world.
Just for information, of the 1004 murders done by the police in USA in 2019, 235 were Black people (23%) when Black people constitute just 12.4% of the national population. There are many such findings where Black people are targeted disproportionately just for being Black. Now that the Blacks and the poor are fed up with White Supremacist violence by the Police, which is only increasing, they have had enough and react quickly and even violently. Their peaceful protests over several decades have not yielded any results. It is because American politicians are mostly working for one or the other corporate interests or foreign countries’ (Israel, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine or other) lobby groups. The militarised police in the USA, especially trained in Israel where they use similar techniques as choking Palestinians by the neck pinning them to the ground, has become a national terror squad against the Blacks, Hispanics, the poor and even anyone who is not White (Indians included).
Given this situation as the background, I was a bit shocked the way Austin identified the protesters as a virus similar to that of coronavirus where he refers to the protesters thus: “Dusro Viras (virus) ragacho, hottacho, oxikpyancho, okkol nathlyamcho, zathi virodhimcho and gorya kanttallyaco.” Here, Austin’s own prejudices and unexamined stereotypes about the Blacks and the poor of America appear exhibited in the last paragraph of his article (report). (Isn’t this how our own government in India, and especially the Middle class denigrate the Dalit protests against atrocities, or Muslim and other protests against CAA/NRC recently?) So, when is protesting a crime in a democracy? When are protesters in a democracy illiterate and brainless? If anything, these are the very means to alert the leadership that it is failing to address the needs of a section of citizenry. Again, when is the police using military tactics against citizens, especially against some targeted communities, legal and tolerable? Of course, violence is not a solution. But the poor, the Blacks and minorities in America are tired of racist violence, discrimination, and domination all the while the state is completely unconcerned about their plight and cry. Their ability to tolerate and appeal for justice have not been working for decades. Perhaps violence is a way of sending a message by a desperate people. But labelling them as virus, angry, intransigent, uneducated, brainless, caste (religious?) haters and White-haters is extremely insensitive and sharing of the same prejudices as White supremacists.
Then again Austin’s unhappiness about the violent protests appears not about the issue of justice to the affected Black community but his worry and anger is because the great (and special) America is perceived in bad light all over the world; and worse, China and Russia are laughing happily. What does this argument mean? Just to keep the façade of being a great (democracy) country whose image needs protection against the world and not give cause for Russia and China gloat with happiness protests should not happen? What is the point of a democracy (if America is one still, many have started doubting about it because it is a militarised deep state controlled corporatist state) if that country can’t deal with protests decently? What is the point of a democracy if that does not recognise its citizens’ suffering brought upon them by its own institutions? Whenever, I had some critical posts about how Modi government is dealing with India, economically and socially, some Modi lover would berate me saying, “how dare you try to undermine India’s image in front of the world!” In a democracy this argument is pretty idiotic because it stinks of blackmail while covering the failure of the leadership and national institutions. Austin’s argument (maybe without much reflection or honestly made) falls into this category and does no merit to America or any democracy worth the name. These are my reactions assuming that I understood rightly what is written and what Austin meant in his article. Austin wants racism to disappear from the world and America. Well, in the history of humanity, nothing good has happened to the poor and the oppressed without at fight, sometimes even violent fight. And, this is how Blacks will claim their right to equality and fairness within American democracy. In this process, violence, though unacceptable, will also play its role, though, there is ample evidence that other deep state and political actors are actually indulging in violence. The current spate of rioting and protests may awaken the callous state and the majority society to come to grips with what is happening in the country.
